The Royal Charter under which the BBC operates is to be
reviewed in 2016. Thus, now seems a particularly pertinent time to ask: What is
the purpose of the BBC at the beginning of the 21st century? Does it serve its
stated purpose? If not, what purpose does it actually serve? Does it satisfy
its key criterion of being impartial? Does its unique form of funding, the
licence fee, remain justifiable and legitimate in the early years of the 21st
century?
And above all else, does the BBC provide a public
service? Does it represent the interests of the people that it purports to
serve? If not, whose interests does it serve?
This book is currently in production and should be
finished by late 2012 / early 2013.
